Samsung Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2: The Smartwatch Becomes an Everyday Health Companion

In August 2026, Samsung began selling the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2. The new generation is designed to go beyond step counting and workout logging, with Samsung positioning its watches as continuously worn health and wellness companions capable of collecting biometric data and turning it into more understandable insights.

Galaxy Watch9 focuses primarily on everyday wellness, sleep and physical activity, while Galaxy Watch Ultra2 adds specialised features for demanding sports, outdoor activities and diving.

From activity tracker to health-data companion

Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 are built around Samsung's BioActive Sensor and Samsung Health ecosystem. The watches collect biometric information while the software analyses it to help users better understand sleep, activity, recovery and other wellness trends.

Continuous wear is an important part of this approach. Data collected throughout the day and during sleep enables the system to establish a more personalised baseline instead of relying only on isolated measurements.

Vitals – five signals measured during sleep

One of the major additions to Samsung Health is Vitals. During sleep, it analyses five key biometric signals:

  • heart rate;
  • heart rate variability or HRV;
  • respiratory rate;
  • skin temperature;
  • blood oxygen saturation.

After sufficient data has been collected, the system establishes an individual baseline. Vitals can then highlight meaningful deviations from the user's usual overnight patterns.

The purpose is not to diagnose a medical condition but to make changes in personal health data easier to notice.

Heart Health Score brings several signals together

Heart Health Score combines multiple cardiovascular wellness and lifestyle factors into a simpler overall assessment.

Rather than requiring the user to interpret several independent measurements, Samsung Health presents a broader trend together with personalised lifestyle guidance.

Daily Cardio Load – balancing activity and recovery

More exercise is not always better. Recovery is an important part of physical performance, and Daily Cardio Load is designed to help users understand that balance.

The feature analyses workout intensity and duration to estimate accumulated physical load and recovery needs.

This can help users decide whether to push harder on a particular day or choose lighter activity and additional recovery.

Fitness Index and hearing protection

Fitness Index provides a broader view of physical fitness using activity and body-related information and can help establish personalised fitness goals.

The Hearing feature can monitor environmental sound exposure and alert users when noise reaches potentially unsafe levels.

Galaxy Watch9 is designed for around-the-clock wear

Galaxy Watch9 is available in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes, with Super AMOLED displays reaching up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness.

  • 40 mm model – 390 mAh battery.
  • 44 mm model – 445 mAh battery.
  • Memory – 2 GB RAM and 32 GB storage.
  • Platform – Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite.
  • Water and dust resistance – 5 ATM and IP68.

Samsung has also focused on comfort because continuous health tracking becomes more useful when the device can comfortably be worn throughout the day and while sleeping.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 – built for demanding outdoor activity

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 shares the core health features of Watch9 but adds hardware and specialist tracking modes aimed at intensive training and outdoor activities.

The 47 mm watch features a titanium case, an 800 mAh battery and a Super AMOLED display capable of reaching up to 5,000 nits of peak brightness.

Trail Run analyses more than distance

Trail Run is designed for running over varied terrain. It tracks elevation, climbing progress and terrain-related information that cannot be captured by pace and distance alone.

This allows runners to assess workout intensity more accurately and adjust their pace according to the terrain.

Sweat loss and hydration guidance

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 can use Sweat Loss data to estimate fluid loss relative to body weight. Nutrition Alert can then provide hydration guidance during supported activities.

This can be particularly relevant during longer runs and other sustained endurance activities.

Ultra2 also extends into diving

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 carries 10 ATM water resistance, an IP69K rating and EN13319 certification related to diving instruments.

The watch can automatically record basic diving information including depth, dive duration and water temperature. Samsung is also planning additional capabilities through a dedicated Ultra2 Diving application.

Water resistance is not permanent and may decrease over time, so the watch should always be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Can a smartwatch replace a doctor?

No. Although smartwatches can collect an increasingly broad range of biometric information, these wellness functions are not intended to replace medical diagnosis or treatment.

A smartwatch can be useful for observing long-term trends and identifying changes from a person's usual patterns. The medical significance of those changes, however, should be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional when appropriate.

The availability of individual health features may also vary by country, software version, watch model and connected smartphone.

The biggest change is not simply new hardware

Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 illustrate the direction in which the smartwatch market is evolving. Competition is no longer simply about counting steps more accurately or offering additional workout modes.

The growing value lies in continuously collecting multiple signals, establishing a personalised baseline and turning long-term changes into information that is easier for the user to understand.

Samsung Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 entered general availability on 7 August 2026 and are also listed on Samsung's Latvian website.

The value of a smartwatch increasingly lies not in a single measurement, but in helping users understand how their sleep, activity, recovery and overall wellness change over time.
